2022 EarthDay Celebration Was a Great Success!
GPC spent Earth Day 2022 Nurturing Nature, Saving Earth, and the Future
Our planet is special, inhabited by almost 8 billion people and nearly 8.7 million species. Our ecosystem is undergoing drastic changes and collapsing faster than ever anticipated. Overpopulation, climate change, deforestation, or pollution is never unknown to us, yet the planet we call home faces the consequences of our indifference & inactivity.
The need of the hour is to understand and acknowledge “the gravity of the situation.” Earth Day presents a perfect opportunity for us to pledge ourselves to the healing process of mother Earth.
First started by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, this event aims to educate people about our actions’ adverse effects on our environment and explore sustainable solutions to protect it. The Earth Day 2022 theme was “invest in our planet,” which appeals to every individual and institution to work collectively to save our planet. Whether going Green, recycling or reusing waste material or saving natural resources, every small commitment leads to a more significant impact on our ecosystem. For Global Paint for Charity, Earth Day is yet another opportunity to reassert our mission of building a healthy and happy community. Every year on this day, along with Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and Gwinnett County Solid Waste, we host an annual recycle drive to collect recyclable materials that otherwise end up in landfills and pollute the environment. We emphasize recycling and reusing today, so we don’t have to reduce tomorrow.
Earth Day 2022 paint drive event and the outcome
2022 marked the eleventh year of hosting the annual Earth Day event. The results were overwhelming, and for us, it’s truly reassuring to experience the active participation of the community members. This year Global Paint collected 41,288.56 lbs of Latex paint. The donation included 263 five-gallon buckets and 2398 one-gallon cans. It surpassed our last year’s records. While describing this year’s event, Executive Director of Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Marlatt Schelly quoted, “It truly warms my heart to see the number of residents lined up to dispose of their items the proper and sustainable way rather than disposing of them in the landfill where it would take decades upon decades for them to biodegrade. Residents shared their appreciation for hosting these events and often asked when the next one would be. In just three short hours, we could serve 3,098 vehicles – an average of 1,032 per hour! By doing so, participants helped Mother Nature not only save precious landfill space but created the opportunity for these items to be repurposed into new products and uses.”
Keeping the commitment made to the community
For any non-profit, the most crucial factor is delivering on the promise made to the community. Global Paint has created a large-scale social impact and inspired thousands of people to adopt sustainable habits. In the past 11 years, GPC has reached 13 million people and 44 countries worldwide and has transformed the most devastated communities with some of the brightest and the most vibrant recycled colors. GPCs core value is creating a healthier and happier world for us and our future generations. Events such as Earth Day are a great way for our community to repurpose items that are no longer needed and can be used by someone else – whether it is paint recycled into different colors and shipped to countries for people who couldn’t otherwise afford it or recycling textiles into valuable items such as mattresses, insulation, and more. The process saves landfill space and precious resources, limits waste by recycling these items, creates jobs, boosts the economy, and more. It truly is a win-win-win!
Schelly describes GPC as a committed and credible organization. Quotes, “Global Paint for Charity has been a long-standing community partner in helping Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful further our mission of Connecting People & Resources for a Sustainable Gwinnett, and as Executive Director, I could not be more thankful to have GPC not only as a sustainability partner but a friend who shares the same philosophy in wanting to create a world with less waste and leaving it brighter and more colorful for future generations.”
Bottom line
It takes us all to collectively work together to save our planet, no matter what corner of our world. A person creates almost 5 pounds of trash every day, and instead of sending it to landfills and harming our environment, recycling, reusing, and conserving resources can change lives. We have only one home to live in, and we should consume its resources with care. As the former US President Barack Obama rightly said
“We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.”
To deal with this crisis, we need continued support from our community and donors every day and can’t afford to wait for any particular day. So join Global Paint for Charity in its movement to fight the environmental and ecological crisis and change the world with a gallon of paint at a time.
